                                                                                                                                                             Early Wrought Iron Surface Mount Latch 17th-18th Century - Needs Repair (40101)

Very early (likely European) wrought iron surface mount lift bar latch with extended operating handle on end of the bar.  No outside handle found with it.  

From the 17th century or early 18th.  The hand wrought spring has broken off and needs replaced. 

This lock body measures 8  3/4" deep x 4" at widest x 3/4".  Latch is right hand.  Back set is about 4" to hub center.  The small face plate that wraps around the face of the door is bent with a partial vertical metal tear.  

Shown in close-up photo.  

Metal shows surface pitting and some light rust.  This piece was well made with nice edge feathers and linear detail but needs repair.  Weighs in at more than one pound.
