  • Wear to corners, edges and spine ends. Lightly boards. External spine edge starting to crack. Remains tightly bound with lightly toned intact endpapers and strong hinges. Bookplate to front paste down. Toned pages with fine spotting to most page margins. 'J.W. McKenzie' to upper edge of title page. Small pencil annotation to fly page and faint pencil to lower edge of page 37.

  • BOOKPLATE: L. Johannis Whitefoord Mackenzie Armigeri [John Whitefoord Mackenzie 1794 - 1884]
  • John Whitefoord Mackenzie was born 29 August 1794, the eldest son of John Mackenzie M. D. of Edinburgh. He was a member of the family of Mackenzie of Lochwards in Ayrshire, who are descended of Mackenzie of Davochmaluak. A solicitor, he was apprenticed to Francis Napier and became a member of the Society of Writers to His Majesty's Signet 26 May 1818. He married, 2 October 1826, Jane Campbell, daughter of John Gordon of Carleton in Ayrshire, another Writer to the Signet. He died 8 November 1884. He had a significant collector of early Scottish books.
