Phang Phra Khan refers to the deity who understands the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, recognizing that time dictates the lifespan of all living things. When the time comes, life ends as breathing ceases, and the physical body disintegrates back into elemental atoms. This cycle is referred to as "Phra Khan" or "Phra Kala," meaning the Lord of Death.
Astrology, as a method of foretelling the future, is the most effective tool for humans to understand such events, akin to a doctor who diagnoses the severity of an illness and determines whether it can be cured or how long a patient may live. The Bodhisattva, who attained enlightenment and understood the paths of the stars in the universe, would know whether someone was destined to meet their end or if there was a way to alleviate their fate. The ancient Srivijaya people referred to someone with such supernatural insight as "Phang Phra Khan."
It is believed that Phra Sri Maharaj Chulamaniwarma Deva of the Srivijaya Kingdom during that era was revered as the Deva Bodhisattva Phang Phra Khan. As a result, sacred objects were created depicting a figure seated in a diamond posture, covering its face with both hands, with a prang-like (temple spire) design resembling a crown on the head. The figure also features a serpent symbol, with the hair on the head styled in a bun with eight spikes, known as the "Eight-Spiked Moon," symbolizing the great Maharaja, akin to the incarnation of Narayana (Vishnu) who descends to alleviate suffering in the human world.
