Jaime Hernandez:

The 1997-P Botanical Garden Commemorative Coin was struck to commemorate the Botanic Garden located in Washington, D.C. The Botanic Garden was officialy established in 1820 and later re-established in 1842.

In 1994 the Botanic Garden required financial funding, therefore the Government approved the production of Commemorative Botanical commemorative coins. For every coin sold the Botanic Garden received a $10 surcharge.

Obverse: The obverse features the facade of the Botanical Garden. Around it is a wreath of flowers and underneath the facade are the inscriptions, United States Botanic Garden 1820-1995 E Pluribus Unum."
