This deciduous climbing vine is native to East Asia. The dried fruits/berries are used in Chinese Medicine to treat a wide array of nervous conditions, while also supporting the endocrine system, the digestive system, and healthy liver and kidney function. Schisandra has adaptogenic, aphrodisiac and immune enhancing properties and is found in many Chinese formulas. This twining vine will spread laterally as well as up a trellis. Shiny green leaves look slightly like a magnolia but the flowers are smaller, pink to white blooms and eventually mature to bright red berries.
Berry production usually begins after 3 to 5 years.
Plant in partial shade in hot summer areas.
Perennial hardy to zone 5.
My garden is 100% organic. I do not use any chemicals. I use only natural fertilizers such as kitchen clippings, grass clippings and leaves.
This plant was brought from Ukraine 9 years ago. This plant is monoecious, meaning that it has distinct male and female flowers on the same plant.
Both male and female flowers are of similar size. They have 6-9 petals. The male flower has five or so smaller "petals" in the middle. The female flower looks like a small strawberry.
Please see the photo of the male and female flowers growing on the same plant. These are my original photos.

Schisandra is used as an "adaptogen" for increasing resistance to disease and stress, increasing energy, and increasing physical performance and endurance.
Schisandra is also used for preventing early aging and increasing lifespan, normalizing blood sugar and blood pressure, stimulating the immune system, and speeding recovery after surgery.
It is also used for treating liver disease (hepatitis) and protecting the liver from poisons. The Chinese have developed a liver-protecting drug called DBD that is made from schizandrin, one of the chemicals in Schisandra.
Other uses for Schisandra include treatment of high cholesterol, pneumonia, coughs, asthma, sleep problems (insomnia), tiredness and irritability associated with emotional disturbance (neurasthenia), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), chronic diarrhea, dysentery, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, involuntary discharge of semen, thirst, erectile dysfunction (ED), physical exhaustion, excessive urination, depression, irritability, and memory loss. It is also used in children to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks of fever associated with an inherited disease called familial Mediterranean fever.
Some people use Schisandra to improve vision and muscular activity, protect against radiation, prevent motion sickness, prevent infection, boost energy at the cellular level, and improve the health of the adrenal glands.
Schisandra fruit and leaves are edible. I like fresh, frozen, and dried Schisandra berries in my coffee.
