The stock chassis is very thin and has a ton of flex in the front area on the Tamiya Sand Scorcher. This skid plate not only helps protect the chassis but adds also rigidity to the front part so the chassis greatly reducing chassis flex.

Stock the chassis flexes so much that it beats up the steering linkages and bends them over time so this skid plate helps with that as well.
