About the book:  Don't Spare Me, Shankar is the collection of Shankar Pillai’s (of Shankar’s Weekly fame) cartoons on Nehru ; the title itself being taken from Nehru’s edict to Shankar.
Those of us who were educated in schools following the CBSE curriculum would be able to (fondly) recall few of these from their Civics books in the senior grades. As grows one’s understanding (and age), so does one’s understanding and appreciation of the stinging wit laced with deep respect that the artist had for his subject. Shankar has truly mastered the art of at once being irreverent and respectful - a most remarkable achievement.
The collection is most particularly relevant today where humour has vanished from public discourse. It is only humour which saves both the ruler and the ruled from demagoguery. There’s nobody today, who will say “Don’t Spare Me, Shankar“. That precisely, is the crisis of our times.(Reader review by Aditya)

About the author:  Kesava Shankar Pillai (1902 – 1989), better known as Shankar, was an Indian cartoonist. He is considered the father of political cartooning in India. He founded Shankar's Weekly, India's Punch in 1948. Shankar's Weekly closed down during the Emergency of 25 June 1975. From then on he turned to making children laugh and enjoy life.  He was honoured by the Government of India but he is most remembered for setting up the Children's Book Trust (1957)
