SYNOPSIS:Part of the beloved How and Why Wonder Books series published by Grosset and Dunlap, this illustrated children's Civil War history was written by Earl Schenck Miers - a noted American historian who authored over 100 books on the Civil War - and illustrated throughout with color and black and white artwork by Leonard Vosburgh. The 48-page oversize softcover covers the gathering storm, Fort Sumter, the blockade at sea, the campaigns of Generals Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Grant, the Battle of Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln, and Appomattox. Originally published in 1961 to coincide with the Civil War centennial, the series was edited under the supervision of Dr. Paul Blackwood of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. This 1976 printing of the centennial edition is a collectible artifact of mid-century American children's educational publishing - a period ephemera piece and historical document capturing how the Civil War was presented to young readers of its era.
