The socket is for PCB mounting, with the threaded socket ring panel mounted by a metal (silver) ring nut on the metal (silver) ferrule. The panel bezel is black plastic and three black plastic spacer rings are included for proper spacing between the edge of a PCB and an enclosure endplate.

The socket uses 6 pins, one each for L, R, and Ground signal. The second set of 3 pins is switched. Use these to wire a smaller, 1/8" (3.25mm) headphone socket and it will be disconnected when you plug into this 1/4" Neutrik jack.
This is the gold standard for a full-size PCB-mounted Neutrik headphone jack, especially on headphone amps. It has been used in many designs that I've built and sold as the owner of Beezar Audio, such as the many Millett Hybrid designs and the ECP Torpedo amplifiers. I've never had one lose connection or start to get "scratchy" in over a decade of use.
