Hello and welcome to my auction!

Here we have a very historic Hawaiian shirt and the rare matching dress depicting the moment when Christian missionaries landed in Hawaii.

Here’s some history -

“In the dawn hours of January 18, 1778, on his third expedition, British explorer Captain James Cook on the HMS Resolution and Captain Charles Clerke of the HMS Discovery first sighted what Cook named the Sandwich Islands (that were later named the Hawaiian Islands.)  Hawaiian lives changed with sudden and lasting impact, when western contact changed the course of history for Hawai‘i.

Forty years after Cook’s death, the Pioneer Company of American Protestant missionaries (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM)) set sail on the Thaddeus for the Sandwich Islands (on October 23, 1819.)  After 160 days at sea, on March 30, 1820, the Pioneer Company first sighted and landed at Kawaihae on the Island of Hawai'i.

There were seven American couples sent by the ABCFM to convert the Hawaiians to Christianity in this first company.  Missionaries arrived first at Kailua-Kona on April 4, 1820; they then went to Honolulu and arrived there on April 14, 1820.

Captain Cook estimated the population at 400,000 in 1778. When Vancouver, who had been with Cook, returned in 1792, he was shocked at the evidences of depopulation, and when the missionaries arrived in 1820, the population did not exceed 150,000.”

Both labels read "HAWAIIAN CASUALS STAN HICKS MADE IN HONOLULU".

I would date them to the early to mid 1960's.

These shirt and dress combos were very popular during that decade, and were marketed as "honeymoon sets"!

This shirt and dress are 100% polished cotton - very soft and perfectly worn in!

The fabric has a bright yellow field background depicting the Pacific ocean flowing into the harbor of Kailua-Kona, Honolulu, or Kawaihae.

Probably Honolulu because there is a mountain that looks like Diamond Head in the background.

Let’s just say its an artistic conglomeration of events that occurred in Hawaiian history.

Floating on the sea are American galleons - the Thaddeus, with other boats, and catamarans, which are filled with native rowers and greeters.

Along the bottom of the shirt, the print features the Hawaiian Alii royalty and the native entourage welcoming the Haole missionaries.

The colors are multiple shades of yellows, browns, and gold.

A very historic and unique shirt with matching dress.

The shirt features spread collar, neck loop, two double pleats on the back, one matching left chest pocket, vertical button holes with King Kamehameha brass buttons.

Make sure to check your measurements.

Shirt measures:

Shoulder to shoulder: 18”

Shoulder to end of sleeve: 9 1/2”

Top of collar to hem: 29 1/2”

Underarm to underarm: 22” x 2 = 44" chest

I would consider the shirt a medium.

The dress is the exact same brushed soft cotton material and stunning pattern as the shirt.

The dress, which I believe is called a sheath style, features a round open collar, and is sleeveless.

There is a zipper in the center back with a small metal hook at the top, but the other side where it should attach has broken off and will need to be replaced.

There are open slits on each of the two bottom side seams that are 6" long and feature a gold fabric Chinese style button closure at the top and the inside features a gold fabric lining that is very stylish and unique.

There are two darts on the chest for the bust.

Since there is no size label, so I did my best to provide some measurements so you can determine if it will fit you.

Please understand my male ignorance and ask me any more questions you may have so you have a full picture of the garment's size.

Here are the dress measurements that I took.

Shoulder to shoulder - 16" across

Underarm to underarm - 21" x 2 = 42" chest/bust?

Top of back collar to bottom hem = 35" - which I would imagine would be to the knee depending on how tall you are.

Neck opening - across 9"

Arm opening - 7" top to bottom and 5" across at widest point

Hem width - 21" x 2 = 42"

Both are perfectly worn in with this beautiful very soft buttery fabric.

A very cool, unique and unusual shirt and dress!

They would make a stunning impression at any tropical gathering, tiki party or theme wedding.

Any questions?

Feel free to ask.

Enjoy!

Please do not pay until I send you an invoice. Shipping and material charges must first be determined before you pay. Ebay shipping calculator doesn’t add shipping material charges which I rarely charge for, depending on the item sold.

***Please note: we do our best giving descriptions of new and used pieces. Regarding the sale of musical instruments, we have found it impossible to describe every mark on an instrument or amp that is not in the "mint" category. Also, what's important to you may not be important to someone else. For example, you may say, "I don't care what it looks like as long as it plays or sounds well." Another person may say, "Body cosmetics are very important to me so tell me about every scratch, nick and blemish." So, please ask the questions that are most important to you. If you ask they will be answered. They are free and there's no limit. Additional photos can also be made available. No returns for sizes so check measurements carefully.

***My shipping policy is simple. DO NOT PAY IF YOU WIN THE AUCTION!

I FIRST MUST DETERMINE THE FULL COSTS TO YOUR SPECIFIC ADDRESS AND WHAT SHIPPER TO USE AFTER I BOX THE ITEM AND KNOW THE FULL WEIGHT AND DIMENSIONS!!! I WILL SEND YOU AN INVOICE ONCE I HAVE PAID FOR THE SHIPPING MATERIALS AND DETERMINE WHICH SHIPPER IS THE CHEAPEST AND BEST OPTION. ALSO, I NEED TO CALCULATE THE ADDED CHARGE FOR INSURING THE ITEM BASED ON ITS FINAL SALE PRICE. SOME OF THE ITEMS I SELL ARE EXPENSIVE AND HEAVY. THEY COST MONEY TO SHIP! IF YOU DON’T AGREE WITH MY POLICY, DO NOT BID. I HAVE OVER 4K POSITIVE TRANSACTIONS AND ALWAYS DO MY BEST FOR MY CUSTOMERS. THANKS!

I purchase boxes and shipping materials and charge the buyer for them at  cost. This does not show up in the Ebay shipping calculator. Neither does the insurance cost. So do not bid if you have a problem with it costing more that what is listed. I always find the best and cheapest shipper depending on the destination and size of the boxes. I have used FedEx, USPS and UPS. They are have their strengths and weaknesses. Because of these factors, sometimes I  setting a flat shipping price just in case some of you don't read my policy. I will refund any overage if the charges are less and expect you to fairly pay if the charges are more. All receipts will be scanned and shared with you.

***It is our policy to require a signature on delivery of all musical instruments we sell. Please let us know if you prefer no signature required when ordering or we will automatically require a signature.
