1893 NYYC New York Yacht Club and RYS Royal Yacht Squadron

Brenton Reef and Cap May Challenge Cups Rules and Regulation Booklet

Published by the NYYC by J.V.S. Oddie, Secretary NYYC on March 1, 1893.

The British yacht Britannia won both races against the American schooner Navahoe.

Navahoe: (From the MIT Museum website) "Built for Royal P. Carroll for cruising to Europe and racing in English waters. The first large metal (steel) yacht designed and built by HMCo. Much of the rig design was used by the following Cup aspirant Colonia and HMCo's first Cup Defender, Vigilant in 1893."

Britannia: (From K1Britannia website) "The royal cutter yacht Britannia was built by Henderson’s on the Clyde in 1893 for Queen Victoria’s son Albert Edward, then Prince of Wales. George Lennox Watson designed her to the Length and Sail Area Rule and had her constructed at the D&W Henderson Yard on the River Clyde in Scotland."

There is an excellent and detailed description of both the Cape May and Brenton Reef Cup Challenge Cups on the America Scoop site.

Cape May Challenge Cup: New York Yacht Club. Sponsored by James Gordon Bennett in 1872. Gordon took control of the "New York Herald" after the death of his father James Gordon Bennett, Sr. He was a sportsman who sponsored many regattas, horse, automobile, and airplane races.

Excellent condition. Binding holding the cover of the booklet is fragile and requires careful handling; the top staple is holding the cover. All other pages are held well by the binding. Pages in excellent condition with minor shelf/age consistent with being over 100 years old.
