First released by Del Rey in 2014, Star Wars: A New Dawn holds an important place in the Star Wars universe: In addition to being a prequel novel to the Star Wars: Rebels TV series, it's the first tie-in work created and released in conjunction with the Lucasfilm Story Group. Star Wars Rebels executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman all consulted on the work, which depicts the official story of the first meeting of Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla.

The book also features the first appearance of Captain Rae Sloane, a character I created to represent the new Empire and who has since appeared in many other Lucasfilm-licensed works. It further has the first in-canon mention of cortosis, which had previously been introduced in I, Jedi by Michael Stackpole (based on an idea by Timothy Zahn).

The book also contains a three-chapter preview of Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron by Alexander Freed.
