American-born,
“Sonny” Weintraub is one of Israeli’s best-known young painters of Israelis, Yemenite
and Oriental children, as well as old people (including Ben Gurion and Gold
Meier) are among his favorite subjects and his work can be found in the homes of
European and American collectors.
He is a
graduate of the Maryland Institute of art and studied under the renowned
teacher Jacques Maroger.
As a
volunteer in the US Merchant Marine during World War II, Weintraub found
subjects for his early canvases on his trips to Europe and the
Mediterranean. An Aliyah Bet volunteer, he was briefly interned in Cyprus
by the British before arriving in Palestine to participate in the War of
Liberation. Following a stint in the Israeli Merchant Navy, Weintraub
settled in Tel Aviv in 1955 to paint full-time. He held successful shows
and participated in group exhibits in Israel and abroad.
