About the book >.>.> Tempus Publishing Group in conjunction with Ottakar's PLC came up with the original concept of developing local history books with a difference. Instead of employing a historian to write about an area, they decided to encourage local people to submit their personal memories. Last year the project proved to be such a success that a further twelve Ottakar's branches were approached to produce a book. We were searching for suitable material that included memories of all kinds, from school days and local businesses to family tales. We first approached Isle of Wight Radio and the County Press to help inform island people of our challenge. Thankfully both companies felt it was an exciting and worthwhile project and gave us the publicity we required to get the show on the road. Stories were slow in materialising, however interest was building. Many local people realised that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and contributors to the book forwarded names of * local characters who had a good story to relate. Initially the idea for the book predominately was to recall peoples memories of Newport throughout the ages. The material we received was of a superb quality and it included historical facts and amusing tales - overall an excellent mix. This was a thoroughly enjoyable project to have undertaken and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed compiling it. (LL)
