🔬 ADHESIVE SCIENCE: 3M™ VHB™ Modified Acrylic & Conformable Foam
3M™ VHB™ Tape 5952 features a modified acrylic adhesive on both sides of a very conformable, black acrylic foam core. It is designed to replace liquid adhesives, rivets, spot welds, and screws.
• Shock & Vibration Absorption: The viscoelastic foam core absorbs energy and relaxes stresses, providing a durable bond that resists wind, vibration, and thermal expansion.
• Permanent Sealing: The closed-cell structure creates a 100% waterproof and dustproof seal against moisture and environmental elements.
• Broad Material Compatibility: Exceptionally formulated to bond to powder-coated paints, rigid plastics, glass, and medium-to-high surface energy metals.
1. CLEAN: Strip all oil, dust, and wax using 50:50 IPA/Water. Surface must be bone dry. For heavily soiled surfaces, a degreaser followed by IPA is recommended.
2. ALIGN (PRO TIP): At 50mm, handling the dot provides a substantial bonding surface. Do not touch the black adhesive with bare fingers. Leave the red liner on, position carefully, and press the exposed side down first.
3. APPLY & PRESS: Apply firm, even pressure (approx. 15 psi) across the entire surface. This is critical for VHB—pressure causes the foam to flow and "wet out" into the micro-texture of the substrate.
4. DWELL: VHB is a pressure-sensitive adhesive that builds strength over time. Allow 72 hours at room temperature for the acrylic polymers to fully interlock and reach 100% maximum structural strength.
Q: Is this genuine 3M™ VHB™? How can I tell?
A: 100% Genuine. The red PE release liner features the authentic repeating "3M VHB" logo print in white, and the core is the signature black acrylic foam.
Q: Will this work on textured surfaces or car dashboards?
A: YES! The 5952 features a 1.1mm thick, highly conformable foam core. It is specifically engineered to compress, adapt to surface irregularities, and physically interlock with heavily textured surfaces and gently curved plastics.
Q: Is the bond waterproof and heat resistant?
A: Yes. Because the foam is "closed-cell," water cannot pass through it. Once fully cured, it is highly resistant to moisture, UV, and temperature fluctuations up to 300°F (149°C) short-term.
Q: Is it easy to remove later?
A: 3M VHB is designed for PERMANENT structural bonding. It is exceptionally strong. Removal requires cutting through the foam core with dental floss or a wire, followed by heavy scraping or specialized adhesive removers to clear the residue.
