Topffer's charming travelogues through the Alps in which he guides caravans of his boarding-school students on foot thrum with illustrations of both Topffer's humorous caricatures and Calame's sublime mountainscapes. Here we have views of mountains, glaciers, valleys, cities, towns, and scenes of European life, all in a bucolic nineteenth-century mode that seems impossibly idyllic to the contemporary reader.
