About the Garmin Forerunner 165

The Forerunner 165 is the sweet spot for runners who want a modern AMOLED display and Garmin Pay without spending for advanced training analytics. At 39 grams with an 11-day battery, it’s comfortable enough for all-day and overnight wear. The bright 1.2" AMOLED touchscreen is the most important upgrade over the FR55 — colors are vivid, text is readable at a glance, and the always-on option lets you check pace without a wrist flick mid-run. The barometric altimeter (absent on the FR55) gives accurate elevation gain and loss on hilly courses. Garmin Pay works on all six variants including the base models.
Training features include PacePro grade-adjusted pacing, daily suggested workouts, wrist-based Running Power, Running Dynamics (cadence, stride length, ground contact), VO2 Max estimation, Recovery Time, and Garmin Coach adaptive plans for 5K, 10K, and half-marathon. Health tracking covers Body Battery, HRV Status overnight trend, Morning Report, nap detection, sleep score, all-day stress, Pulse Ox, and women’s health tracking.
What the FR165 does not include: no multi-band GPS (single-band multi-GNSS only), no Training Status or Training Readiness, no Race Widget, no Real-Time Stamina, no triathlon mode, no speaker/mic for wrist calls, and no LED flashlight. For the full training analytics suite and multi-band GPS with SatIQ, the Forerunner 265 is the next step up. For triathlon-specific coaching and a speaker/mic, the Forerunner 570 is the right choice.

What’s the difference between the base and Music edition?
The only difference is storage. The Music edition has 8 GB and supports offline playlists from Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer via Bluetooth headphones. The base has 4 GB without offline music. Both include Garmin Pay, barometric altimeter, and all other features — nothing else differs.
Does it have Training Readiness or Training Status?
No. The FR165 includes Morning Report, HRV Status, Running Power, and daily suggested workouts — but not Training Readiness, Training Status, Race Widget, or Real-Time Stamina. For those analytics, step up to the Forerunner 265 or higher.
Does it have multi-band GPS or triathlon mode?
No to both. The FR165 uses multi-GNSS single-band (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) — no dual-frequency or SatIQ. It has 25+ sport profiles but no dedicated triathlon multisport mode with auto sport-change transitions. The Forerunner 265 adds both.
Does it have a barometric altimeter?
Yes — unlike the Forerunner 55, the FR165 includes a barometric altimeter for accurate elevation gain/loss on hilly terrain and floor counting. This is a meaningful upgrade for trail and hill runners.
