- James Fagan, born in 1864, was an American Etcher that worked in a realistic style. He favored naturalistic scenes of everyday life like people milling about, men working, and families interacting. Fagan was also interested in classical subjects, choosing to depict heroes from Greece and Rome as well as people in robes and classical dress. A well-traveled man, he also created scenes from places like Cuba and the Netherlands. Fagan died in 1918.
Condition: Original paper seems to be entirely intact, but has issues. Age discoloration, some spotting, soiling, wrinkles, pencil marking which were originally under the mat, etc. The mat to which it was mounted is in poor condition, but we were wary of removing it lest we damage the etching further. PLEASE zoom in on the photos to make your own evaluation of this artwork. For provenance, my great grandmother's name is written in the margin in the same script as the other markings on the piece.
