He was the only son of a Polish country gentleman of ancient lineage and literary tastes. The child was baptized, in the Catholic faith, Teodor Josef Konrad. The family name was Nalecz Korzeniowski. His mother, Evelina Bobrowska, died when her son was eight years old. Four years later his father died. Appolonius Korzeniowski had translated several of Shakespeare's plays into Polish.
