This is an original set published in 1937 and they are in Very Good Condition. You are buying from one of the largest stockist of cigarette and trade cards in the UK.
Founded in 1844, Godfrey Phillips were destined to become one of the "big boys" of the tobacco industry, but more importantly for collectors, they were prolific issuers of cards, producing well over one hundred different series between the 1890s and 1939. Towards the end of 1936 they launched three series of fifty footballers, Famous Footballers, International Caps and this series. The format of these was the same and they had many of the same players in common all depicted in colour head and shoulders pictures with interesting text on the adhesive backs giving not just career information, but interesting asides such as Worrall being considered the comedian of the Portsmouth team, that Arsenal were prepared to pay a world record fee of £12,000 for Hearts player T. Walker or that W.G. Richards bred Alsatians in his spare time. Among other well-known players are Arsenal's E. Hapgood and E.J. Drake, Scottish born H. Gallacher of Derby County, Everton star 'Dixie' Dean and legendary Stoke player Stanley Matthews. This set is undoubtedly in the Premier League of football issues. Cards size 67 x 36mm
