“Gentleman in Black Skirt”
A beautiful depiction of an aristocrat from the period between the end of the Revolutionary Period and the beginning of the Empire Period. In keeping with his status, the sitter is shown here in a black skirt and a white, tied scarf. The move away from the outdated, royalistic splendor of court fashion is particularly clearly emphasized here by the simple elegance of the clothing. The person portrayed looks at the viewer intimately and intimately with large, dark eyes. His somewhat shy, good-natured smile is unique and magical. A “mysterious” subtle curtain in the background should also be mentioned here, which symbolically perhaps refers to the “attraction of the hidden”.
The miniature is not signed. In view of the excellent academic miniature technique and the virtuosity of the character depiction, it can be assumed that this was an important miniaturist of the first half of the 19th century.
Watercolor and gouache / framed / glazed. Dimensions: circular approx. 6 cm (with frame approx. 9cm). Date of origin around 1800. The antique miniature is in age-related condition with signs of wear commensurate with age and small loss of paint in the background area. The leg plate is in good condition - no cracks, no bulges or warped!
