1879 America Illustrated
This book printed in 1879 has a 1878 copyright. It features many engravings and some are by famous artists who were alive and working during the publication of this book featuring their art. There would have been a limited number of the 1879 edition printed, so this is an opportunity to have a period piece of work by these artists, many of whom were adventurers who explored the "wild west" in order to bring back views via their art to the Eastern population.
Example: TM on page 43 "View at Allegrippus" is the mark used by Thomas "Yellowstone" Moran". Thomas Moran was an American painter and printmaker of the Hudson River School in New York whose work often featured the Rocky Mountains. Moran was born in 1837 and died 1926. This engraving was produced in his lifetime, not a later reproduction.
The cloth hard cover is scratched and shows wear especially to the corner edge. The edge papers are nicely gilt. The inside first few pages show some foxing and toning from handling. Still in good condition for a 140 year old book that was used many times. I don't see any torn inner pages or scribbles / notations or missing pages.
