The 16ER AG60 carbide insert features a triangular shape with a cutting edge that is 16mm in length. The AG60 designation indicates that the insert has a 60-degree angle on its cutting edge, which is ideal for turning threads. ER indicates these inserts fit toolholders with an orientation designed for external threading.
These inserts are uncoated, which gives them a smoother, less adhesive, polished surface which makes them ideal for getting a great surface finish when cutting soft metals like aluminium which are prone to galling. This is especially important for thread cutting, where any galling on the thread can result in "cold welding" where a thread becomes seized after tightening it causes runaway friction which literally welds the two surfaces together.
