The oldest identifiable Chinese soapstone sculptures are dated to more than 3000 years ago. The Ming and Quing dynasties saw the height of soapstone production in China. Soapstone was not only used for art it was also used to make dishes, utensils, plates, teapots, and  soapstone.


This brush pot most likely was used to clean scholar brushes, store brushes, and store other miscellaneous items. 


This brush pot is a stunning piece of Chinese artistry. It came from the renowned gallery (Potala Palace) several years ago. The exact age of the brush pot is unknown; however, the characteristics of this brush pot indicate that it is an antique piece.


The brush pot is comprised of several colors of beige, brown, and off-white soapstone. It is hand crafted into a cylinder shape. Several layers of these colors and varying design make this brush pot one-of-a-kind.
