Original Miguel Covarrubias Lithograph - The Smuggling of Slaves and, Ivory Caravan
Description: This is an original black and white lithograph by Miguel Covarrubias, titled “THE SMUGGLING OF SLAVES” and “IVORY CARAVAN”, The artwork depicts scenes related to slavery. The front side of the artwork depicts a large sailing ship with multiple sails sailing on calm waters. Numerous smaller boats, filled with people, are arranged in rows leading away from the ship. The water has been illustrated with wavy lines to depict its texture and movement. The sky appears to be cloudy or overcast, adding a somber mood to the scene. The art has been matted with two acid-free beveled mats on each side, 8x10 inches, and is ready to frame. The mat and backing board are brand new.
On the back is another lithograph, “IVORY CARAVAN”. It shows a group of seven individuals carrying large tusks on their shoulders. The individuals are depicted in a stylized manner, with elongated limbs and bodies. They are walking in front of a fence, behind which there are three huts with conical roofs. There are also some trees and plants depicted in the background, adding to the rural setting of the scene.
Miguel Covarrubias, also known as José Miguel Covarrubias Duclaud, was a Mexican painter, caricaturist, illustrator, ethnologist, and art historian. He was born on November 22, 1904, in Mexico City, and passed away on February 4, 1957, at the age of 52. Covarrubias was known for his caricatures and illustrations, which were featured in magazines such as Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. He was also a painter and ethnologist, and along with his American colleague Matthew W. Stirling, he was the co-discoverer of the Olmec civilization.
