This is for an original ticket stub for the July 22 1954
doubleheader between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox from Yankee
Stadium in the Bronx. The first game would be a makeup game from the April 28
rainout at the stadium while the second game would be the regularly scheduled
game for the date. The first game would see a 3-3 tie go into the bottom of the
tenth when Mickey Mantle would homer deep to left field with 2 outs for a 4-3
walk off win. The homer would be Mickey’s 20th of the year and 77th
of his young career. This would be the second walk off homer of his career and
first in extra innings. The Mick would hit 12 walk offs in the regular season along
with 1 in the World Series to give him 13 for his career. The second game would
be an 11-1 Yankees win with both Billy Pierce and Harry Byrd going the
distance. Moose Skowron and Yogi Berra would both homer for the Yanks and
Mantle would go 2-4 with 2 singles, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s. A nice stub for
someone trying to collect every ticket stub from the Micks career along with it
being a career milestone walkoff.
