The first race of the 1977 Winston Cup Grand National season was held at Riverside International Raceway on January 16th. A crowd of 60,000 fans watched Cale Yarborough lead the field of 35 cars in the 119-lap event.
Cale Yarborough was the dominant car. He took the lead on lap 2 and had a five second advantage when it all went wrong. He hit sand and dirt on the track in Turn 8 and spun his car out with 16 laps left in the race. The spin allowed David Pearson to take the lead and go on to win by nine seconds over Yarborough. Following Yarborough were Richard Petty, Dave Marcis, and Sonny Easley.
