Description

Sure, a microscope is an optical instrument used to magnify and observe objects that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. It consists of several key parts:

  1. Eyepiece: Also called the ocular lens, this is where the viewer looks through to observe the specimen. It typically provides a magnification of 10x.

  2. Objective Lens: The lens closest to the specimen. Microscopes can have multiple objective lenses with varying magnification powers (e.g., 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x). By rotating different objective lenses into place, the overall magnification of the specimen can be adjusted.

  3. Stage: The platform where the specimen is placed for observation. It often includes clips or other mechanisms to hold the slide in place.

  4. Illumination Source: Light source, such as a bulb, that illuminates the specimen from below (in a compound microscope) or from above (in a stereo microscope).

  5. Focus Knobs: These allow precise focusing of the image by moving the stage or the lenses up and down.

  6. Diaphragm: Controls the amount of light passing through the specimen. It can be adjusted to regulate the contrast and brightness of the image.

  7. Arm: The curved part of the microscope that connects the tube to the base. It provides support and allows for easy handling of the instrument.

The Byomic Binocular Light Microscope BYO-ST2 is an easy-to-use microscope suitable for beginners as well as primary schools and the first grades of secondary school. This microscope has a fixed magnification of 2x. With the wide-angle eyepiece of 10x, a magnification of 20x is achieved.

Housing

The BYO-ST2 has a robust metal housing with an integrated table measuring 110 x 75 mm. It is equipped with two fixed clamps to hold a sample in position so that it does not shift during observation. There is a contrast plate of Ø60mm in the table. This contrast panel is white on one side and black on the other side.

Eyepieces

Since the Byomic BYO-ST2 is equipped with two wide-angle eyepieces, you have a large field of view and a high depth of field. The 45° viewing angle allows you to look through the microscope in a natural position. The BYO-ST2 can be adjusted as desired. The eye relief is adjustable between 54 and 76 mm. There is a ring on the left eyepiece with which the diopter is adjusted.

Also included are high-quality eyecups that can be pushed over the eyepieces. This means you will not be distracted by light coming from the side.

The following table shows the magnifications that can be achieved with an optional eyepiece. Please note that you need two eyepieces as this is a binocular microscope.

    Battery Disposal

The following information is intended for users of batteries or rechargeable batteries, as well as products containing built-in batteries or rechargeable batteries, who do not resell them in the supplied form (end users):

    1. Free return of used batteries and rechargeable batteries: Batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of in household waste.

You are legally required to return used batteries and rechargeable batteries to ensure proper disposal. You can hand in used batteries and rechargeable batteries at municipal collection points or local retail stores. As a distributor of batteries and rechargeable batteries, we are also obliged to take them back, limited to those types that we have or have had in our product range. You may either send such used batteries and rechargeable batteries back to us (sufficient postage required) or return them to us free of charge in person.

    2. Meaning of the battery symbols

Batteries and rechargeable batteries are marked with a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol (see below). This symbol indicates that batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of in household waste. For batteries containing more than 0.0005% mercury, more than 0.002% cadmium, or more than 0.004% lead, the chemical symbol of the respective heavy metal will appear below the bin symbol: “Cd” stands for cadmium, “Pb” for lead, and “Hg” for mercury.

    Disposal of Energy Saving Lamps

What to do in case of a broken lamp

Energy-saving lamps contain a very small amount of mercury. However, under normal use they are completely safe. No mercury can escape during or after operation. The only situation where mercury may be released is if the lamp breaks. In this case, small amounts of mercury vapor may slowly evaporate into the air at room temperature. The concentration is very low and well below legal safety limits in Germany. Broken energy-saving lamps must be disposed of properly, just like intact or non-functioning ones. Please follow these instructions:

    What you should do:

    • If the lamp breaks inside a fixture, disconnect the fixture from the power supply first to avoid electric shock.
    • Ventilate the room thoroughly for 10–15 minutes and leave it during this time.
    • Avoid cutting yourself on broken glass. Use disposable or household gloves if possible.
    • Carefully collect all parts of the lamp, preferably by sweeping them up.
    • Use a damp disposable cloth or adhesive tape to pick up small fragments and dust.
    • If necessary (e.g. on carpet), use a vacuum cleaner.
    • Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag or contents afterwards.
    • Place all lamp residues, cloths, etc. into a tightly sealed plastic bag or screw-top glass container.
    • Dispose of broken and non-functioning lamps at the nearest collection point for waste lamps.

    What you should know:

Inhalation of mercury vapor is the most common way mercury enters the body. However, you have enough time to clean calmly, as mercury evaporates very slowly at room temperature. Broken glass fragments may still contain mercury, which can evaporate over time indoors. The measures above effectively prevent this. If fragments are carefully collected, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored outside the living area until disposal, no mercury exposure will occur indoors.

    How to avoid lamp breakage:

Whether incandescent, halogen, or energy-saving lamps – breakage can never be completely ruled out, especially during replacement.

    Tips to avoid accidents:

    • Always disconnect the lamp from the power supply before replacing it to avoid electric shock.
    • Allow the lamp to cool down before replacement.
    • Hold the lamp by the base or housing, not the glass tubes.
    • Wrap defective lamps in a soft cloth or store them safely until disposal.
    • Only remove the new lamp from its packaging immediately before installation.
    • Due to their mercury content, spiral energy-saving lamps must not be disposed of in household waste according to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG). Dispose of both broken and non-functioning lamps at the nearest collection point for waste lamps.
