This novel follows the story of Meyer Rabinovitch after his grandma states at dinner one evening, 'We always take care of our own.' This launches Meyer into a questioning of his life, and in turn, his Jewish family's way of life. He wanders the streets of Montreal looking for a Jewish beggar, but fails to find one; this only leads to deeper questioning and personal uncertainty. Wrapped around the book is a rare publisher's sash with promotional quotations such as Swinnerton's statement.
