Description: 224, 189.

(From the Preface) The public are here presented with a Collection of Letters, which were not originally intended to be printed, but written in the familiar intercourse of private friendship Some peculiar circumstances first suggested the idea for their publications As many as were sufficient for the purpose were collected together: every personal circumstance that might have occurred in them blotted out; and they are now allowed to make their appearance with the permission of those to whom they were addressed It will probably seem unnecessary, that any farther accounts of Scotland should be given, since two very respectable characters in the literary world have already communicated their travels to the Public But the Author of these Letters begs leave to say, that the following pages do not contain a description of Scotland in general, but of Edinburgh alone: of its Customs, Laws, Entertainments; and, in short, of all that relates to the manners of a polished people They are the living and real sentiments of the Scotch upon various occasions

Bound in full leather, this is the very scarce Irish edition of this work The volumes display some typical indications of age and wear, including moderate shelf wear and rubbing, with minor loss to high points and spines The hinges are cracked, however the text blocks remain sound Text is clear and crisp through mild age toning with occasional heavier age toning/foxing The armorial bookplate of the Parry family appears on the front pastedowns There is are signatures in ink and pencil to the front free endpapers and title pages
