It's a little beat up only because the original cover is loose from the rest of the book.  There's some tape.  Bended pages but no significant damage. No smell.

All the pages are there, no tears. I feel it's very usable.

Don't know the year. Everything you need to use your machine properly.  And have fun.  I love sewing, been doing it my whole life.

Most problems you can run into can be solved by actually reading your manual.

Keep it threaded CORRECTLY. You will catch on with practice.

Cleaned and oiled properly. Make sure your needle is the right one and when dull, replace it.

When you start to sew make sure you have a good 6 inches or more of a thread tail hanging out before starting to sew. Too short and your needle will come unthreaded or thread will jam.  Redo it.

Start over.

Don't use too thick of fabric. Go slow if sewing jeans. Use a heavy needle. For lighter fabrics or knits use the RIGHT needle. It's not hard. That's in the book too.

For regular mid weight fabrics a size 12 or 14 needle is good.

Hope this helps.

The old machines ARE the good ones. More or all metal parts!
