It works by vibration, not microphone (like phone apps) so it must be clipped to the instrument. 
If you are just tuning the open strings on your stringed instrument or a beginner, you can use the the preset tuning scales [U=Ukulele, G=Guitar, B=Bass, V=Violin (or Mandolin). 

If you want to know what any note is on the instrument, want to practice pitch/intonation,  or if you play any other instrument, use the C=Chromatic setting.
