Filmed in historic locations such as Utah's Monument Valley, Wyoming's Green River and the Nevada Prairie in 1986, the series visits ghost towns, old railroad depots and Indian reservations and takes us on a real stagecoach ride, introducing us to gold miners, cowboys and... Hunters who faithfully recreate the legends of the West. During the journey there are fascinating encounters with a descendant of the Indian chief Geronimo, a ballet dancer in a ghost town and of course with Festus (Ken Curtis), who tells one of his incredible tall tales.

Finally, while we visit the Oregon Trail near Chimney Rock in Nebraska or watch thousands of buffalo roaming the prairie, we are treated to a square dance and Indian Billy Irons of the Hunkpapa Sioux reads the Lord's Prayer to us as he descends from the top of the mountains looking down on the prairie
