This is for an original tag ticket from May 19 1950 for the
47th Western Open held at the Brentwood Country Club in Los Angeles
California. The event was regarded as one of the premier tournaments in the US
along with the North and South Open, the Shawnee Open and the PGA Championship.
The 1950 tournament would be won by Sam Snead with a one stroke victory over
Jim Ferrier and Dutch Harrison. The victory would be Sneads second consecutive
Western Open victory and one of his 11 victories in 1950. Snead considered 1950
to be his greatest year in golf with a scoring average of 69.23 which was a
Vardon Trophy record which stood for 50 years. Snead would lose the 1950 Golfer
of the Year to Ben Hogan, who would win only one tournament and even lose in a
playoff to Snead in the Los Angeles Open. Snead is still the all time leader in
PGA tour wins with 82 victories even though Tiger Woods tied Sam by winning Japan’s
Zozo Open in 2020. This would be Sam’s 55th win of his career. To
put that in perspective, if that was Sneads final victory, it would still put
him ahead of Byron Nelson (52) in career wins and behind only Arnold Palmer
(62), Ben Hogan (64), Jack Nicklaus (73) and Tiger Woods (82). The ticket is in
great shape with just minor chipping on the front and minor staining on the
back, and still displays very nicely. A great souvenir from the Golden Age of
Golf.
