Vintage Gold Tone Filigree Brooch — Aurora Borealis Crystal
A pretty mid-century filigree brooch: an oval plaque of intricate scrolling openwork, with a layered flower rising at the centre to hold a single large aurora borealis rhinestone.
The stone is what makes it. A generous round crystal with a full aurora borealis coating, flashing blue, green, gold and violet as the light shifts across it. Introduced in 1955, AB became the signature sparkle of late-fifties and sixties jewellery, and on this piece the coating is still bright and unworn.
The filigree is built in two layers, the lower plaque forming a scalloped oval frame and the upper flower petals lifting above it, so the whole thing has real depth rather than sitting flat. The beaded scrollwork catches the light beautifully in gold tone.
Fastens with a straight pin and C-hook catch. Unsigned. Filigree of this type was produced in quantity in West Germany and Czechoslovakia through the mid-twentieth century.
Lovely on a lapel, a collar, or pinned to a scarf or hat.

Condition
Very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age. The filigree is intact throughout with no bent, crushed or broken sections. The aurora borealis stone is present, secure, and its coating remains bright and iridescent. The gold-tone plating is even with some natural darkening within the recesses. The pin is straight and the catch fastens [securely / a little loosely].
