The inscription on the back reads with this handmade plate fenton commemorates one of the earliest shoe makers of colonial America, Thomas beard a skilled cordwainer came to Salem Massachusetts in 1620 the community gave him 50 acres of land and paid him £10 a year for his work. Number four in the annual series of collectors plates by Fenton 1973.
