In a slight rectangular form, the compact is composed of a hinged lid in silver and a bottom in gilt bronze. The lid is painted and signed with a lady’s miniature portrait in a Victorian style and covered by glass. The portrait is surrounded by the etched floral motifs over a white and a blue enamel background, respectively. The edges of the lid are also etched with geometric motifs. Inside the compact shows a mirror with an etched frame for protection, a white powder puff, and a screen. The interior is gold wash finished and marked “Made in Italy” and a number “15”. Exteriorly, the bottom and its four sides are all engraved with intricate floral designs. The clasp is tight and secure and the hinge is straight and fully functioning. Notably, the piece is not attracted to a magnet. Like other silver products to oxidize in air, this piece was previously oxidized but polished afterwards.
In 1872, the Italy law deregulated silver production and introduced only a not compulsory inspection of silver artifacts. However, Italian silversmiths rarely submitted their pieces to the optional official hallmarking.

Condition: Very good and clean, with mirror in flawless condition and very light enamel wear, consistent with age and use.
