Please slect Birch or Oak
Sauna whisk, called vihta in Finland and venik in Russia, is a special accessory. To many sauna bathers it is a compulsory item. A whisk is a
bunch of young tree twigs which are used to give a special massage in the sauna. Using a sauna whisk promotes better blood circulation, cleans the skin and enriches it with health. During the course of massage, the bather lashes or slaps themselves or another bather with whisk after dipping it in warm water. Whisks release pleasant aroma in the air adding a bit of aroma therapy.
We have searched out these birch and oak brooms so as to get the best, unpolluted, whisks from as far from habitation as possible. The twigs/leaves for these are cut from sustainable forests (birch grows at 3 feet per year and oak 2ft, much less than that is cut to produce these whisks) Material for brooms is gathered in Latvia. Latvia is one of the ecologically cleanest air countries in the world. Ours are collected under licence from the "DAUGAVAS LOKI" UNESCO World Heritage ecological park near Daugavas in northern Latvia as part of the normal annual coppicing of the forest within the national park and causes no damage whatsoever to the forest. We always use the same, licenced, collector
The Birch/Oak twigs are collected in the beginning of July, when twigs are soft and leaves young
These are the latest crop (July 2025)
Sauna brooms/whisks help with muscle and joint pains. they perfectly clean the skin, stimulate the skin during saunas, and accelerate the healing of wounds and scratches,( not to mention that they smell great) Average length 50cm(20inches)
Its special virtue is that it widens the small bronchi. This helps to clear congestion of the nose and ventilation of the lungs. That's why after usage of such broom it is so easy to breath. Birch leaves have essential oils, tanning substances, vitamins C and A. It is a great idea to wash one's hair with the infusion of broom, since it strengthens hair and helps clear dandruff.
These are this years crop (july 2025), collected in the beginning of July, when twigs are soft, and leaves young.
Preparation of the brooms begins with material gathering in places where the trees are thickest The area is deep in the Latvian northern forest far from any industry, roads or even population
The Broom has to be properly prepared before use. It is necessary to lower dry brooms head down for fifteen minutes in cold water, then 10 mins sticks down in cold water and then approximately for three minutes - in hot, until the leaves become soft.
The Broom's leaves release phytonucides - a biologically active substance that kills or depresses the growth and development of pathogens. Essential oils released by broom improve metabolism, prevent premature aging of the skin and gives a vitality charge.
Phytonucides:- (from NYS gov health site,Forest therapy) "An essential oil released by trees and plants called phytoncides (to protect themselves from harmful germs and insects) can also enhance human natural killer cell activity. It can boost immune functions, fight disease, reduce stress and ultimately be beneficial to human health"
