Marcel Breuer's Story
Marcel Lajos Breuer was a Hungarian-American modernist
architect and furniture designer, known for the Wassily
Chair and the Cesca Chair, which The New York Times have
called some of the most important chairs of the 20th
century.
His work includes art museums, libraries, college
buildings, office buildings, and residences, among which
are:
New York's Whitney Museum of American Art (1966)
IBM Research Center in La Gaude, France (1961)
U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development
in Washington, D.C. (1963–1968)
UNESCO
Headquarters in Paris (1958)
He is regarded as one of the great innovators of modern
furniture design and one of the most-influential figure
in "internationalism" – a major architectural style
dominant until the 1970s.
Cesca Chair
Marcel Breuer created the Cesca Chair shortly after
leaving the Bauhaus in 1928 and named it after his
adopted daughter Francesca. The chair consists of a
tubular steel frame, rattan seat and backrest and
inherently tied to the material innovation and design
principles he formed at the German design school.
While designing the chair, Breuer found inspiration in
the tubular steel construction of a bicycle.

made me interested in polished metal, in shiny
and impeccable lines in space as new components
for our interiors. I considered such polished
and curved lines not only symbolic of our modern
technology, but actually technology itself."

The Cesca chair was the first tubular-steel-frame,
caned-seat chair to be mass-produced. Now, the chair is
considered as one of "the 10 most important chairs of
the 20th century".

These chairs are beautiful!! We get so many compliments. They are a comfortable and stylish set of chairs with an ergonomic design. These chairs will bring the mid-century modern sense to your home and create some personality in your kitchen. They are sturdy, comfortable and super easy to put together. I was initially concerned with the cane holding up but I ordered these over a year ago and zero problems! The assembly process is quite simple with only four screws needed. It will only take you 5 minutes to fully assemble these chairs. Very sturdy chair. Would highly recommend purchasing!

Owned a set of these chairs since 1977
Owned and use daily these Breuer chairs for over 40 years. Seats were replaced about 12 years ago... the caning does eventually wear out. They have held up extremely well, and continue to look almost brand new. They were considerable much less in price when I bought them. So clearly a great value for money spent back then are every bit as stylish if not a classical seat now. They were with a modern table and now with an antique table... they easily make themselves fit your decor.

Very disappointed. We bought two of these - I can't find the more recent one to review - but one is 1.5 and the other is 2.5 years old. The caning in the seat has gone out in both of them. I am 170 lbs and my wife is 130 lbs so it's not as though we're putting unusual strain on the seats. Thought we were getting decent quality for the price.
