The Gorham Manufacturing Company was one of the largest American manufacturers of sterling and silverplate and a foundry for bronze sculpture. The company was founded by a master craftsman Jabez Gorham in partnership with Henry L. Webster in 1831. After Jabez retired in 1847, his son John Gorham succeeded as head who introduced mechanized production methods, enlarged the premises, and expanded the product line. In 1852, John toured many of Europe’s silver workshops and manufacturers and sought highly skilled foreign workmen to train his American workers. Gorham silver was highly influential, during the heyday of American silver manufacturing, approximately 1850-1940, and received many commissions, including the White House during many administrations.
Chantilly is the most popular sterling flatware pattern of Gorham with a distinctive scroll design and fleur-de-lis (flower lily) accents. It has a wide variety of pieces available and was created by noted designer William Christmas Codman in 1895.
Luxembourg was first made in 1893 with scrolls applied to rim by Gorham sterling in Providence, Rhode Island.
