White border postcard shows the Dempsey Hotel at 523 Cherry Street in downtown Macon, Georgia. The busy street has several cars, stores and people. The roofline and hotel sign extend into the top border of the postcard - very unusual. The Dempsey was built in 1912 as a luxury hotel, complete with a Japanese tea room and costumed waitresses. It housed troops and the Red Cross during World War II, then became the Dempsey Motel Hotel in the 1950s. Later it became HUD apartments, housing low-income residents. Unused; excellent condition.
