He was speaker of the House of Assembly, Bermuda, 1972–76. He competed in the men's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay at the 1936 Summer Olympics." He was one of the original founders of the United Bermuda Party. Spurling lived at Three Chimneys, St. George's, Bermuda. This letter is written on Three Chimneys stationery.
