Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis). Also common names: Eye Root, Goldenseal, Ground Raspberry, Indian Dye, Indian Turmeric, Jaundice Root, Orange Root, Yellow Puccoon, Yellow Root is a perennial herb in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, and is one of the most popular herbs sold on the American market and has recently gained a reputation as a herbal antibiotic and immune system enhancer.
American Indians used goldenseal as a medication for inflammatory internal conditions such as respiratory, digestive and genito-urinary tract inflammation induced by allergy or infection. The Cherokee used the roots as a wash for local inflammations, a decoction for general debility, dyspepsia, and to improve appetite. The Iroquois used a decoction of the root for whooping cough, diarrhea, liver problem, fever, sour stomach, flatulence, pneumonia.
One of the alkaloids in goldenseal, berberine, has natural anti-microbial properties, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, which says that the compound kills bacteria that cause diarrhea, fungi that cause yeast infections, and various parasites, including tapeworms. University experts also report that berberine in goldenseal can protect against potentially serious E. coli infections and may generally help strengthen your immune system. Berberine purportedly reduces fevers and acts as a mild sedative, and hydrastine might help reduce blood pressure. Goldenseal is so valued because it improves health in many ways: It is a strong antimicrobial, a mild anti-inflammatory, and a digestive tonic! Its astringent properties make it useful for conditions of the throat, stomach, and vagina, when these tissues are inflamed, swollen, or infected.
Goldenseal may be of use in topical infections and is used as an eyewash, but clinical trials are lacking to support its effectiveness. Goldenseal has been included in cold and flu preparations for its ability to suppress mucus, but little evidence supports this use and its effects are debatable. A berberine extract of goldenseal has been used for diarrhea. Cardiovascular effects are not clearly defined.Goldenseal contains a compound called berberine that kills many types of bacteria in test tubes, including the ones that cause diarrhea. Berberine also kills a wide range of other types of germs in test tubes, such as those that cause candida (yeast) infections and parasites such as tapeworms and Giardia. Berberine may also activate white blood cells, making them better at fighting infection and strengthening the immune system. Today, goldenseal is sold to help with digestion, soothe an upset stomach, and to kill bacteria. It is considered a natural antibiotic and is often combined with echinacea and promoted as strengthening the immune system. Because goldenseal seems to have antiseptic properties in test tubes, it is sometimes used to disinfect cuts and scrapes.
