My Father, John Vahey, who resided in Altoona, PA, obtained this United Transportation Union (UTU) Commemorative Medal, Description Card and Plastic Display Case shown in the first attached high resolution photograph when he worked at the Juniata Shops as an Industrial Engineer for the Penn Central Transportation Company in 1969.

The front side of this gold color matte finish UTU Commemorative Medal is shown in the second attached high resolution photograph.  This side of the medal contains the facial impressions of Charles Luna, H.E. Gilbert, C.F. Lane and N.P. Speirs with four hands coming together in the center.  This coin also includes the following raised text: "PROGRESS THROUGH UNITY"; JANUARY 1969; and the last names "GILBERT, LANE, LUNA and SPIERS".  There is a decorative leaves pattern that lines around the outside perimeter of the medal.  The size of the medal is approximately 1 ½ inches in diameter.

The rear side of this gold color matte finish UTU Commemorative Medal is shown in the third attached high resolution photograph.  This side contains the UTU logo which is prominently displayed on the center of the medal.  Under the UTU logo contains the following raised text:  "UNITED TRANSPORTATION UNION".  The original dates of the founding of their respective unions are exhibited in raised text starting with "BRT * 1863" and continued going clockwise:  "DLF&E * 1873, SUNA * 1878 and ORC&B * 1868".  There is also a series of small stars scattered over the rear side of the medal.  Note:  There is some minor patina on the rear surface especially around the scattered stars.

A side view of the UTU Commemorative Medal is shown in the fourth attached high resolution photograph.  The thickness of the medal is approximately 3/16 of an inch.

The front of the paper Description Card is shown in the fifth attached high resolution photograph.  Starting from the left, the front side of the UTU Commemorative Medal is exhibited against a black background.  The next section is "Your UTU Commemorative Medal" which is a description of the consolidation of four existing unions into one newly formed union as shown in the sixth attached high resolution photograph.  The right side of the card exhibits the rear side of the UTU Commemorative Medal against a black background.  The black and gold color paper card is approximately 11 ¼ inches long and 1 ¾ inches wide.  This card was printed by Litho in the U.S.A.

The rear of the paper Description Card is shown in the seventh attached high resolution photograph.  The back of the card is completely gold and contains no images or text.

The front side of the Plastic Display Case is shown in the eighth attached high resolution photograph.  The size of the Plastic Display Case is approximately 2 inches x 2 inches square.  Note:  A piece of blank white paper was cut and placed inside the plastic case in order to better photographically capture the minor surface scratches.

The rear side of the Plastic Display Case is shown in the ninth attached high resolution photograph.  Note:  A piece of blank white paper was cut and placed inside the plastic case in order to better photographically capture the minor surface scratches.

This is an opportunity for Trade Union, Transportation and Railroad memorabilia collectors to obtain this vintage and historically significant medal that was created and issued in 1969 to commemorate the merger of four trade unions into the formation of the United Transportation Union.
