Recently bought several of these wonderful etchings by Kaethe Kollwitz.Only two left.This one is called "Der Trauernde" "The Mourning Man" It was originally created as part of a " memorial for Karl Liebknecht. It is a restrike from the original plate. Provenance is through the Ferdinand  Rotten Galleries, Baltimore. It is framed in  what appears to be the original framing painted black wood frame. It does have a two line dry line stamp in he bottom right corner Von der Becke, Berlin- Hallensee. which if I am correct indicates the print being pressed around 1962?. Condition of the print appears very good. It was created using soft- ground etching, aquatint and dry-point. I have not examined this outside of the frame. The etching framed measures 16  by 21 1/2inches and the visable image measures 6 1/2 by10 1/2  inches. I have not opened the piece. The frame is solid but has several little chips in the paint.and edge wear which would be expected for it's age.

Kaethe Kollwitz (1867-1945) German Expressionist has worked with painting, print  making and sculpture. Her most famous art series include The Weavers and the Peasant War which depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. She struggled for acceptance as a female artist and her expression of the effects of war and 150 years later her work can still spark controversy.( see current Artnews article.
