 Engl. Handschriften auf Papier, 4 S. auf 4 Bl., c. 21 x 16,5 - 35 x 22 cm, teils angestaubt oder leicht fleckig.

Vier Anträge zur Ausstattung der britischen Kriegsschiffe HMS Tilbury (in Nutzung 1699 bis 1726), HMS Elizabeth (kurz nach der Indienststellung im August 1706, in Nutzung bis 1766) und HMS Ipswich (in Nutzung 1694 bis 1764), unterzeichnet von den Proviantmeistern Jonas Hanway (Vater des gleichnamigen Seereisenden und Philanthropen) und John Hubbard bzw. vom Captain der Ipswich, Commander Robert Arris. Jeweils mit eigh. Genehmigungsvermerk ("... may be supplied ...") u. Unterschrift des damaligen Vizeadmirals Byng. - Die nachgesuchte Ausstattung reicht von Kanonen ("Six Pound Piece of Ordnance"), über Schießpulver ("Gune Pouder") und Takelage ("Port Tackle", "Tarrd Rope") bis hin zu Papier und Schreibunterlagen (Fine Paper, Parchment, Cartridges). Bedeutende Dokumente aus dem Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg und der Entstehungszeit der britischen Mittelmeerflotte (Mediterranean Fleet), die, nach zögerlichen Anfängen im ausgehenden 17. Jahrhundert, seit der Eroberung von Gibraltar 1704 an Bedeutung gewann.

Byng nahm als Stellvertreter des  Oberbefehlshabers Admiral Cloudesley Shovell (1650-1707) am Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg teil, zeichnete sich bei der Eroberung Gibraltars und der Schlacht bei Vélez-Málaga, entsetzte Barcelona, eroberte Menorca und wurde 1708 als Nachfolger Shovells Oberbefehlshaber der Mittelmeerflotte. - Provenienz: Aus der Militär- und Marine-Sammlung von Robert Cole (+1866), die 1861 und 1866 bei Puttick & Simpson versteigert und weitestgehend von Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872) erworben wurde. Die von Philipps ersteigerten Nummern gelangten 1977 bei Sotheby's zur Auktion. Ein Großteil davon befindet sich heute in der Kenneth Spencer Research Library der University of Kansas. Vgl. The British Mediterranean Fleet in the War of the Spanish Succession

BYNG, George (1663-1733), British admiral and sea hero. Four documents signed, partially with autographedd postscripts,

Lisbon, 29 December 1706- 10 March 1707. English manuscripts on paper, 4 pages, c. 21 x 16.5 - 35 x 22 cm, partly dusty or slightly stained,

Four applications to equip the British warships HMS Tilbury (in use from 1699 to 1726), HMS Elizabeth (shortly after commissioning in August 1706, in use until 1766) and HMS Ipswich (in use from 1694 to 1764), signed by the provision masters Jonas Hanway (father of the sea traveler and philanthropist of the same name) and John Hubbard or by the Captain of the Ipswich, Commander Robert Arris. Each with approval note ("... may be supplied ...") and signature of the then Vice Admiral Byng. - The requested equipment ranges from cannons ("Six Pound Piece of Ordnance"), gunpowder ("Gune Pouder") and rigging ("Port Tackle", "Tarrd Rope") to paper and writing pads (Fine Paper, Parchment, Cartridges). Important documents from the War of Spanish Succession and the time when the British Mediterranean Fleet came into being, which, after hesitant beginnings in the late 17th century, gained importance since the conquest of Gibraltar in 1704.

Byng took part in the War of Spanish Succession as deputy to the Commander-in-Chief Admiral Cloudesley Shovell (1650-1707), distinguished himself in the conquest of Gibraltar and the battle of Vélez-Málaga, conquered Menorca and succeeded Shovell as commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean fleet in 1708. - Provenance: From the military and naval collection of Robert Cole (+1866), which was auctioned 1861 and 1866 at Puttick & Simpson and largely acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). The lots bought by Philipps were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1977. Most of them are now in the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas.
