Antique Sterling Silver Lighthouse Sugar Caster Shaker; Up for sale is the British sterling silver lighthouse style sugar caster, dated likely early 19th century or earlier. The caster with a filial on the top of the pierced lid features a cylindrical form. Two notches at the sides of the caster body are for the lid to settle and lock. Both the lid and the caster body have the hallmarks including a lion passant and other marks.
As a simplistic style, lighthouse sugar caster was originally introduced by French in the 17th century. The casters were then developed to more rotund as styles adapted to the purpose and fashions of the time, including with time from Queen Anne sugar casters to vase sugar casters and to baluster sugar casters. Therefore, due to its earlier age, the lighthouse style sugar caster becomes more valuable and rare to find.
