The Water Babies.  Illustrated by  Katharine Cameron.  ca. 1912.  Stokes.  First American Edition.  [From U.K. sheets] 4to.  Blue cloth with pictorial pastedown to  front and gilt design to spine. Eight  color plates tipped to heavy art stock.  Top edge gilt, fore-edge untrimmed. 246 pgs. The deluxe edition.   First published in a smaller (and cheaper) edition in 1905 by TC &EC Jack.  That smaller edition had an abridged text (by Amy Steedman) and was designed as a part of a children's reading series.  The deluxe edition, by contrast, is a production in keeping with the character of early 20th century gift books.

 

 

 

 

 

Cloth to boards very good.  Minor rubbing to corners.  Pastedown very good with some rubbing wear, as shown.  Spine cloth faded.  Gilt remains bright. Some offsetting to endpapers from missing jacket. One page opened roughly where it was presumably uncut from binders, with resulting rough fore-edge margin.
