Lindbergh’s ‘Spirit of St. Louis’ which he flew solo between New York and Paris, a de Havilland Moth similar to that used by Amy Johnson on her solo flight from England to Australia, the Comet, the Rolls Royce S.6B designed by Reginald Mitchell which won the 1931 Schneider Trophy and was the template for the classic World War II Spitfire, the other ‘Battle of Britain’ hero, the Hurricane, jet planes, aircraft carriers, a Comet jetliner, the ingenious aircar which had detachable parts to enable it to be driven as a car, a helicopter, air frigate, the iconic Vulcan bomber, air runabouts which resembled tiny helicopters, a Douglas X-3 which flew at 3 times the speed of sound and ending with a spacecraft. The back of this last card tells us that “Men have already begun to travel into space beyond the earth’s atmosphere. The Russian astronaut Major Gagarin was the first man to travel in space. American astronauts quickly followed and now it is only a short time before men will land on the moon”. Who knows what developments await, but in the meantime enjoy the history of flight with this set.
