Shower Facts: Thermostatic Mixer Valves (TMVs)
A water temperature regulating capsule is the core of a thermostatic mixer valve (TMV). The tiny capsule enclosed in a thermostatic cartridge is sensitive to fluctuations of water temperature. Hot and cold water is mixed by the cartridge to yield the right temperature as determined by the user. As a result, the water temperature can be maintained for the entire duration a user showers.

TMVs are compatible with the majority of home plumbing systems. The only exception are systems that are plagued with unstable water pressure. To address this, isolating or pressure equalizing valves can be installed to steady cabin water flow making the plumbing system feasible for TMVs.

Certified thermostatic mixer valves are built with a safety system that will shut water flow in the event of a drop in water pressure or water supply failure. The cartridges are commonly calibrated by the manufacturer to a lukewarm 38â or 100.4â.
